9 QUIRKY SOUTH ISLAND “PHOTO SPOTS” IN NEW ZEALAND
Following on from the North Island photo spots, we thought it would be rude to not include the South Island… especially as the South Island is simply stunning and a must to explore. Here are some quirky photo spots to stop off during your adventure.
The Giant Crayfish – Kaikoura, Canterbury
Kaikoura is maori and when translated it means “Kai”- food and “Koura” – crayfish… so you can understand why there is a giant Crayfish there and while you are there, we have to recommend eating something…. Can you guess what? You clever bugger…. That is correct, get some good Kaikoura Crayfish down ya (please read that in a kiwi accent!)
The Donut – Springfield, Canterbury
If I was to say Donut and Springfield…. What would you think? Simpsons?? Yeah, we would think that as well. Would you think of a town in New Zealand? Maybe now. In 2007 Springfield in New Zealand was gifted a donut to promote the upcoming “Simpson’s movie” the original donut was set on fire, however, there is a lovely new pink donut there now and has steps at the back so that you can sit in the donut for your photo.
Giant Salmon Statue – Rakaia, Canterbury
Rakaia is known for its Trout and Salmon fishing, therefore it is only right that they have a huge lifesized 12 metre Salmon statue there…. Okay, maybe the Salmons don’t get THAT big… but it is worth stopping of and taking a few photos of you pretending to catch it.
Bradrona – Cardrona, Southland
Okay, this is a little different… it isn’t large… it isn’t giant or huge…. It is just… ummm different. There is a fence, on the driveway to “The Cardrona” that is decorated by Bras… a lot of bras. Basically in 1999, 4 bras turned up on a country fence and other bras decided to hang out with these bras and before you know it, there were so many bras that they started to cause a bit of a traffic hazard. So the bras moved to the driveway of “The Cardrona” and became a symbol for Breast cancer. Make sure you put in a little donation when you turn up… oh and a bra if you have one going spare.
Giant Fruit – Cromwell, Otago
Cromwell used to be well known for it’s Mining, however, they have now swapped mining to stone fruit and if you visit in summer you will find loads of roadside fruit stalls everywhere… you will also find huge fruit sculpture for you to stop next to and take a photo. It is so colourful and looks fab.
Large Trout – Gore, Southland
This famous trout is found right in the centre of town and it celebrates Gore’s brown trout fame. There are 3 other iconic statues in Gore as well. There is the Country Music Hands of Fame statue, and the Gore Ram Statue – See if you can get all three!
The Giant Sausage – Tuatapere, Southland
Yes that is correct, there is a huge giant sausage that is impaled on a fork in Tuatapere and you have got to see it to believe it. Tuatapere has decided it is New Zealand’s sausage capital… We are not too sure what that entails exactly… but the statue is there so that means they must be the Sausage capital.
Paua – Riverton, Southland
This quirky town is close to the Invercargill and has a 4 metre high Paua Shell on the main street of the town. Originally it was put there as a way of getting attention for a small local family souvenir shop but it has now grown to be an icon of Riverton and a spot a lot of people stop off at.
Giant Surfer – Colac Bay, Southland
This small town is perfect for… you guessed it…surfing. If you are planning on driving to the deep south then stop off at Colac Bay. The town is so cute and the Giant Surfer is just catching a wave…. Waiting for you to photograph it.
As you can see, the South Island is just as quirky as the North Island… you can see why they are part of the New Zealand family. If you manage to take photos at any of these places, please hashtag #quirkyrichiereelspots as we would love to see you there… also, if you missed our “North Island Quirky Photo spots” then click here.
